Guest Blog Post: UT Osher Lifelong Institute (OLLI)

AustinUP is proud to feature this guest blog post from our newest community partner, the Osher Lifelong Institute (OLLI) at the University of Texas at Austin.

Did you know that if you eat a plant-based diet, drink in moderation, eliminate smoking and exercise regularly it will improve the quality of life and possibly even extend your years on earth? Sure, sure we all know that! But what about brain health?

The brain, like all other muscles in your body is amazingly resilient if worked and stretched. In fact, research indicates that ongoing mental workouts can even grow new synapses! You may be thinking, wait a minute, I read, do crossword puzzles, and watch Jeopardy, isn’t that enough? All great, but can these activities increase joy, inspire friendship, build confidence, help you to pick-up new skills, or improve your ability to adapt to change?

The UT Osher Lifelong Institute (OLLI) at the University of Texas at Austin is a place where this happens naturally. Curriculum content is designed by people like you and for you. Our community is member-based for people 50 and better. Content is delivered via lectures, six-week seminars, and optional field trips. There are no text books to purchase or homework to do.

OLLI consists of five learning communities. Members explore a broad range of topics in history, culture, science, health, literature and the arts. A program year consists of three six-week sessions: fall, winter and spring. Schedules vary and will accommodate almost any busy life style.

If this is something that you would like to explore, take a look or give us a call: (512) 471-3124. Fall enrollment for the 2020-2021 program year opens online at 9:00 am on May 11. Come for a visit during our spring session for a sneak-peek. Sign up as a prospective member and we will remind you when fall enrollment opens.
